Keshet is a community-based organization that enhances independence, optimizes personal potential and supports communal inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Thirty-six years ago, a group of Chicago-area parents met around a kitchen table in need of a support group for families with children who have disabilities. They shared their hopes for their children and their desire for their kids to have a place in the community. The group began offering recreation programs and family events, which attracted more families and interest, and, eventually, led to incorporating as a non-profit organization, Keshet. Those initial families could never have dreamed of what Keshet would become. Today, Keshet offers educational, vocational, recreational and residential programs for children, teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities from all backgrounds. Over 1000 people with disabilities benefit directly from Keshet’s support each year. Keshet values each individual and offers experiences to create purposeful and meaningful lives. With Chicago-based programming at over 70 sites, Keshet strives to meet its most important mission: To do whatever necessary to allow individuals with disabilities to achieve their potential in their home communities.
